Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the ability to question specific rulings made by the official, echoing the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
