Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then found numerous other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report initial examinations show the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the incident," they commented.
City officials stated they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking official stated the incident made him stunned and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
