Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
