The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Job That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Since my friend was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – close to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student came up to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but straight off informed my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York resulted in a job in Zurich where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
