Our Premier Record of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Number One Position.

Initially, this album may look closer to an arduous university quiz than a new popular music album by a musician who just had a previous hit featured an international K-pop star. Split across four separate sections and performed in thirteen tongues, we have a head-spinning classical-tinged work exploring female mystique, spiritual ascent, and corporal change, frequently through the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic handled with raw openness elsewhere—is launched heavenward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a major orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a long roll call of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself makes the efforts of contemporary artists seem quite small.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That Lux succeeds in escape overly academic posturing is nearly miraculous, with sole praise belonging to the artist. While this is not the first time album to alchemize the past and modern styles, the ambitions feel far higher here, and the tightrope walk more dramatic. What really elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is a core spirit of joy. Much like the iconic artist at her height, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing hearts apart, the listener still desire to be right there for the journey.

A Prime Example of Joy

That exuberant spirit shines brightly during a stirring piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy for several minutes. Then, all the music falls silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment before a hilariously exaggerated string surge thuds in with comedic impact. The song immediately shifts into the frenetic single driven by racing strings, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with Lux lies in you rarely exactly understand—or even wish to know—what it will go next."

Nearly each track finishes in a completely different place than where it began. One moment explores the fleeting trappings of celebrity over a delicate orchestration before disintegrating in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing her previous trap-infused style starts off moody and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, until sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth the song's rough corners.

The Bridge Of Experiment and Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act on the album is straddling the gap of radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is no surprise that it has achieved her highest-charting release to crack the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a suite of utterly undeniable hits. One track performed primarily in the English language swells on a refrain that seems to collect more and more nagging melodies while it spins skyward. That feat is echoed on another expansive track that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it shares with pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- lover labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a sharp edge, like a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for high Art amid of looming artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism for glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its own built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep source of buried treasure that requires time to fully explore but doesn't feels like a chore. Where some big releases of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, Lux offers a sumptuous feast at which the guests around the table, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flit from conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common gossip about hopeless men. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
