Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio became as messy on the pitch as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Matteo's Unexpected Return

A single player kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He was on the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to stay there temporarily. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

He joined initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
