EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
