Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.
This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's transfer to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
The former president was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brasília.
The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
